1. Freedom of Speech: How important is it? Does the freedom go "too far"? What areas of speech should not be protected?
I think freedom of speech is extremely important. If people decided to say what they wanted to anyways they could get arrested.Everyone should be able to have specific beliefs about things and be able to tell people what they are. I think people should be able to say what they want but I do not like to hear alot of vulgarity. I do not want my children to hear someone cussing and saying distastful things about women. That is where I think speech should not be protected. My mom told me when she was young a man was cussing around her and her father got into a fight with him.
2. Freedom of Religion: Is separation of church and state necessary? Why or why not?
I believe that God should be allowed in school. The nation was found under God and people are trying to get rid of him. I understand that people arent christians but I am and that is my opinion.
3. Criminal Procedure: Are defendant's rights crucial to our system of government? Why or why not? Many argue that defendants have too many rights - do you agree? Why or why not?
I think its important for the defendants to have rights because I think everyone rich or poor should have the same rights as americans. No I dont think they have too many rights because they are americans and every american should be equal.
I agree with you that I wouldn't want my daughter to hear someone saying nasty thing about women, or even men for that matter. It's sad that someone like your mother had to witness violence because of another person's rude choice of vocabulary. I definitely think words and comments that are crass shouldn't be allowed to be said whenever and wherever.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, freedom of speech is very important. I also, do not like to hear people cussing around my son. I think that's where speech should be protected also.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with you about the issue of freedom of speech. I have two young children who are at a very influential stage. They will repeat what they hear and believe it to be proper. There are many things I do not wish them to repeat. I disagree on the issue of separation of church and state though. I grew up a pastor’s daughter. I am not religious today. I do not attend church or practice religion of any sort. While I allow my children to attend church when their Mamaw wants to take them and to go to VBS and learn about religious things, I do not force the lifestyle on them. Also, I do not force mine on them either. When they are older and can see things from their own opinion, I see it proper for them to make their own decision. Although this country was found under God, the nation has since evolved. There are many more denominations now and lifestyles to be had. As the nation and people evolve, does this mean that one religion (Christianity) should be put superior over others? If you allow prayer in school, will you also allow Catholicism practices? Apostolic? Satanic? It brings up so many issues over such a broad spectrum that more controversy could be seen over this than over our current President! (which we all know is pretty controversial at this point). I hope that didn’t come out as rude. I was trying to describe why I disagreed on that point. However, on the rest of your post, I agree wholeheartedly!
ReplyDeleteI disagree with your number 2. I don't think that students should be punished for praying in school but I don't think that others should be pushed into doing so. Separation of church and state just ensures that everyone has a right to their own religion and that they won't be forced to practice other religions. Think of it this way, if you lived in a country that was founded by Muslims would you wanna be forced to practice their beliefs? However, like I said before if a couple students want to pray in the cafeteria, they should be able to. It just shouldn't be forced.
ReplyDeleteGreat Job, I like how you tell us about things people have told you and probably figured them out on your own. You explained to me how you see these touchy topic. and I agree with very much.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on the freedom of speech. I think it is important that people voice their opinions. All though, they need to do so in a respectful manner. People need to understand that not everyone believes in the same way they do and need to respect that. If someone wants to say something they need to look at their surroundings and know not to be cussing in front of children. They may do it around their children, but others want their children to not hear those things.
