1. The issue of race - does the government do too little or too much to reduce the instances of racial discrimination? Why or how so?
I believe the Governement does too much. I think they are trying to make up for what happened to the African Americans and now they are trying to compensate for that. I saw a quote once about black history month and that we should not have one month devoted specifically to black history that we should focus on the history of the world.
2. The issue of gender - same question as #1.
I actually dont think they have a fine balance. The only issue with gender for me is salaries. The government has said that men and women in the same field same experience should make the same. The statistics show men are still making more than women but I dont necessarily think thats the governments fault.
3. The issue of sexual orientation - same question as #1 and #2.
Personally I dont believe that homosexuals should have the right to be married and honestly the only reason I can say that is because I am a christian and that is how I have been taught. I was taught it is wrong and that is not what marriage is, Marriage is a between a man and a woman.

Gender issues in America are becoming a smaller problem. Recently in the military (Army) women have gained the right to serve in Combat Arms Unit (example: infantry). The Equal Pay Act was a great attempt to equalize salary for women compared to men. The next step for this is actually enforceing the act and having strictor penalties for violation. A Law does no good if no one enforces it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your race question simply because it seems like the government is trying to compensate black people based off the fact that they are black. Not every black man or woman had ancestors that were all slaves.
ReplyDeleteI strongly disagree with you concerning homosexual couples being able to legally marry. I understand your stand point that because of your religious beliefs you do not agree with marriage equality and respect your opinion. However I do disagree with you, because religion should not have any place in our government. Our government is supposed to practice separation of church and state, although a lot of our legislatures do not, and our religious beliefs should not influence the laws passed or voted against within our government. There is more than one religion in the United States so if the government lets one religion influence them how can you say we have freedom of religion and equality for all? Marriage equality is a social and equality issue, not a religious one.
ReplyDeleteI agree for the most part with all that you said. Although I was also raised in church as a Christian to believe homosexuality was wrong, I live life without religion. I am against any religion (organized or not) and simply believe in living my life the right way without a book to follow. I believe it is everyone’s own personal choice to live as they want. That being said, I continue with the belief I was taught as a child that one cannot be “born this way” when it comes to homosexuality. For the most part, I DO agree with what you say and I appreciate your opinions and sharing them!!
ReplyDeleteI actually agree with what Jared Griffith said about religion and government. He makes a very valid point that I think gets overlooked. I know a lot of people have a belief because they were brought up in church believing it or simply because a book says it is wrong. But not everyone reads that book or lives by that book. So a universal opinion of it being wrong would in itself be wrong.
I agree with what you said on all three questions. I was also raised in the church and believe that same sex marriage is wrong, this again is how I was brought up. But I do see what Jared is talking bout. There is suppose to be separation in church and state. I think everyone should be allowed to live their life but I do fear that allowing same sex marriage will open up many new doors.
ReplyDeleteI respect your opinion with issues on sex orientation. I also am a christian. I don't believe in same sex marriage, but who are we to judge. I feel like if two men or two women want to get married, they should be able to. Honestly, it does not hurt me, or my relationship I have with my husband. God will judge us. Its not our place to judge anyone. Like I said though, I don't believe in it, but hey let them get married.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your second statement I don't really think it is the governments fault for the salary difference I think it is more of a business approach companies know that woman want these positions and even thou they might perform better they are willing to do them for less if you during most job interviews pay is something that is negotiated
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you on question #3, that's how I've been taught and I also feel like marriage should be between a man and a woman. Any other way just isn't right. Good job!
