1.Is American news media too dependent upon polls? Is it appropriate for news agencies to create polls and then report on them? Why or why not?
I dont really know to be honest. I do not know that much about polls or keep up with them. In order to vote I need to be more aware of them and what people are saying about the country. I think its appropriate for news agencies to create polls though. People want to know whats going on and if that is the way people like to find out then I say go for it.
2. How important is political party identification to you (e.g. as a Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, etc.)? Was it more or less important to your parents & grandparents? Does it seem more or less important to your friends? Why or why not?
Political Party identificatioin isnt really that important to me. I think I would rather just discuss seperate issues than have to put a specific label on myself. As long as I can remember my parents have said they are republican. They have ALWAYS voted republican, but my parents are conservative so it makes sense. My friends dont seem to find it important either.
3. Do you feel that you opinion of politics is more influenced by economic issues or by social issues? Why?
My opinions of politics are based on all I believe. I am concerned with things that involve me, but also things that I feel strongly about.

I definitely agree with your answer to question number 2. I don't like to label myself as a certain political party. I feel like people these days judge you right off the bat as soon as they hear what your political party is. My parents are republican, too. They always vote Republican. Sometimes I think they immediately vote Republican without even listening to what the candidate has to say!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you and Rebecca, I don't feel the need to label myself either. I agree on some Republican's have to say and some of what Democrats have to say.
ReplyDeleteTo gain more knowledge on polls, statistics and room for error I highly encourage you to take a Prob and Stats class. I was awful at math and knew nothing of the requirements and effort put into these things until that class. It helps me tremendously and not only with math skills!
ReplyDeleteI also agree with you on number two. I find it hard to place a strict label on myself. In reality, my views on separate issues matter more than just a label. If that means I fall into a category, feel free to consider me that if it helps you. However, in my mind, like you I find it easier to simply talk of issues and not categories.
I also find it shocking how many of us feel more strongly about the importance of separate issues than a political party or category! I’m not sure if this is a good or bad thing, considering a lot of things in the political system are based off strict party choices but it’s nice to know I’m not alone in this quirky habit!
ALSO, Rebecca you make a great point I left out in my blog. I feel a lot of citizens are more concerned with the party option than what these candidates have to offer. I think they see a label and think "yep. that fits what i'm looking for". Just like someone can go to the store and pay outrageous prices for a shirt that will only last a week. Simply because of the label. Great points ladies!!
ReplyDeleteVery good points, I also have taken a Probs and Stats class and it really opened my eyes on how polls are taken. I used to take them at face value, whatever they said it how it was. Margin of error and how sampling is done had a lot to do with how these polls are put together.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with how you feel about labels. Which ever candiate's proposed ideas are going to benefit my family is who I am going to support. However, in the last few elections I have voted Republican.
The issues are way more important than the political party labels. I think that the people in my generation are straying from the original parties. I believe everyone agrees with certain issues from each party and that's how it should be. We aren't supposed to vote for a party, we are supposed to vote for what we believe is right and what's best for the country.
ReplyDeletePolls can be important for helping Americans understand how fellow Americans fell about issues but polls can be overused
I agree with Jenna that polls can be overused. There seems to be a poll for everything today. From the cars we drive to the diapers we put on our kids. I don't listen to the news a whole lot any more, but when election time comes I'm more interested in the issues than the candidates. I want to know how they are going to help or hurt me.
ReplyDeleteI think that politics are important to an extent. It may seem unimportant to some but voting is a right and should be used so you have a say in what happens. Also, i dont agree about your id. though but I am older and am more concerned with issues going on now example obama care my parents are in that age group and it will effect them. i agree with you on your answer to question number 3 anything important or that effects me or my family.

ReplyDeletePolitical parties are not really that important to me either. My opinion is based on the issue at hand rather than a political affiliation. Polls are very important, in my opinion. Polls help people get involved with governmental issues. Polls are one of the ways we can voice our opinion. I feel that both social and economic issues are important, both are big influences. I am very concerned with economic issues, such as financial aid for college. I also have very strong opinions about social issues.
